I personally recommend LMMS because it's free and easy to use, but you're free to use whatever you're comfortable with. Unfortunately, I use a Windows, so I do not know the process of running VSTs on a RasPi (but I believe the Linux process, at least, involves Wine to run VSTs right). In order to use the soundfont, you'll need a digital audio workstation that can use. I do not know where to submit enhancement requests/bug reports for the lmms.io sharing platform, and do not believe there is much maintenance activity going on. I never understood what finally made it click, but it did end up working eventually. I recall getting that on my first time, too.
